Few cities in Europe carry the weight of history as visibly as Granada. Perched at the foot of the Sierra Nevada in southern Andalusia, it was the last stronghold of Moorish rule on the Iberian Peninsula, surrendering to the Catholic Monarchs in 1492 after nearly eight centuries of Islamic civilisation.
