Ihr Reiseführer für Granada
Few cities in Europe carry the weight of history as visibly as Granada. Perched at the foot of the Sierra Nevada in southern Andalusia, it was the last stronghold of Moorish rule on the Iberian Peninsula, surrendering to the Catholic Monarchs in 1492 after nearly eight centuries of Islamic civilisation. That layered past is not merely a footnote; it is the city's architecture, its street plan, its food, and its daily rhythm. The Alhambra, rising on its red-earthed hill above the city, remains one of the most visited monuments in Spain, and rightly so. Its Nasrid Palaces, with their honeycomb stucco ceilings and reflecting pools, represent the apex of Moorish decorative art anywhere in the world.
The Alhambra draws the crowds, but Granada rewards those who look beyond it. Directly across the Darro valley, the Albaicín quarter climbs in a tangle of whitewashed lanes, Moorish house foundations, and small squares where the views back to the fortress are quietly extraordinary, particularly in the hour before dusk. Higher still, Sacromonte has its own distinct identity, shaped by the cave dwellings carved into the hillside and a long association with flamenco performance. An evening walking tour through Albaicín and Sacromonte at sunset is one of the more atmospheric ways to understand how these two neighbourhoods function as a counterpoint to the monumental grandeur across the valley.
