Your guide to Warrnambool

Your guide to Warrnambool tickets

Warrnambool sits at the western end of the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia, where the Southern Ocean meets a coastline shaped by volcanic plains, river estuaries, and limestone cliffs. It is a working regional city rather than a resort town, with a population large enough to sustain a genuine civic life, and that distinction gives it a character quite different from the smaller holiday villages strung along the road to its east. The Merri River meets the sea here, and the Hopkins River mouth lies just to the east of the city centre, lending the place a geography that feels genuinely coastal rather than merely adjacent to the water.

The city is perhaps best known nationally for two things that sit at opposite ends of the cultural register: the annual May Racing Carnival, one of the oldest and most attended country race meetings in Australia, and the southern right whales that arrive each winter to calve in the sheltered waters of Logan's Beach. The whale-watching platform at Logan's Beach is one of the few places in the world where visitors can observe these animals from land at close range, and the season typically runs from around June through to September, though the whales follow their own schedule. Both the racing carnival and the whale season draw visitors from Melbourne and beyond, giving Warrnambool a rhythm that many regional cities of similar size do not have.
