Your guide to Patong
Patong sits on the west coast of Phuket island, facing the Andaman Sea across a bay that curves in a near-perfect arc of pale sand. For decades it has been the most energetic corner of Thailand's largest island, drawing visitors from across Southeast Asia and beyond with a combination of beach life, nightlife along Bangla Road, and a density of restaurants, shops, and departure points for excursions into the surrounding landscape. It is not a place that pretends to be quiet, and that honesty is part of its appeal. The beach itself, Hat Patong, stretches for roughly three kilometres and remains the social centre of the town, lined with sun loungers and the kind of organised chaos that somehow resolves itself into a workable rhythm by mid-morning.
The town's geography shapes how visitors move through it. The beachfront road, Thaweewong, runs parallel to the sand and connects the northern and southern ends of the bay, while the streets behind it form a grid of sorts, dense with accommodation, street food stalls, and the tailors and souvenir shops that have been fixtures here for generations. Bangla Road, running inland from roughly the centre of the beach, is the axis of Patong's nightlife and is best understood on its own terms: loud, colourful, and entirely self-aware. Further inland, the hills that ring the bay offer a different perspective, and the roads climbing out of town towards Kalim or Kamala to the north give a sense of how dramatically the landscape changes once you leave the flat coastal strip.
