Your guide to Matera
Few cities in the world carry the weight of continuous human habitation quite like Matera. Carved into the ravines of Basilicata in southern Italy, this ancient city has been occupied for at least nine thousand years, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements on earth. Its famous Sassi districts, the Sasso Caveoso and the Sasso Barisano, tumble down the sides of a deep gorge in a dense layering of cave dwellings, rock-cut churches, and stone-faced palazzi that seem to grow organically from the tufa itself. UNESCO recognised this extraordinary landscape in 1993, and when Matera was named a European Capital of Culture in 2019, the wider world caught up with what southern Italians had long understood.
The Sassi are the obvious starting point for any visit, though the word starting point barely does justice to how completely they absorb attention. Walking through them is less like touring a monument and more like moving through a living geological record. The rupestrian churches, some dating to the Byzantine period, preserve frescoes in states ranging from vivid to ghostly. The Cripta del Peccato Originale, a cave church outside the city proper, contains some of the finest early medieval painting in the whole of southern Italy. Above the Sassi, the Piano district holds the cathedral and the older civic fabric of the city, and the contrast between the two elevations gives Matera much of its dramatic visual logic.
