Lagoa is the municipality that holds this coastline, a compact council in the central Algarve whose name is shared with its quiet inland town but whose real draw lies seaward, where centuries of Atlantic erosion have carved arches, sea caves, and golden grottos into the rock. The region sits roughly midway along the Algarve's southern shore, close enough to Portimão and Albufeira to feel connected to the wider coast, yet distinct in the particular quality of its geology and the relative calm of its fishing villages.

Benagil is the name that travels furthest. The village itself is little more than a handful of houses and a small beach tucked into a cove, but the cave that bears its name has become one of the most photographed natural formations in southern Europe. Accessed only from the water, the Benagil Cave opens into a domed chamber with a circular oculus in the ceiling, through which light falls onto a crescent of sand below. A guided kayak tour departing from Benagil Beach is the most direct way to reach it, paddling through the low arch at the cave entrance and into the interior, where the scale of the chamber only becomes apparent once you are inside. The experience is tied entirely to sea conditions, and the Algarve's calmer summer mornings tend to offer the most reliable access.
