Cross the valley of Princes Street Gardens and the architecture shifts from crowded sandstone tenements to the Georgian grid of the New Town, planned in the 1760s as a rational counterpoint to the medieval chaos on the ridge. Charlotte Square, Heriot Row, and the broad sweep of George Street represent one of the most coherent examples of Georgian urban planning in Europe. The two halves of the city have different rhythms, different pubs, and a different relationship to the past, and understanding that contrast is probably the most useful thing a first-time visitor can do.
