Your guide to Finestrat

Your guide to Finestrat tickets

Finestrat sits on a rocky hillside above the Costa Blanca, its old quarter of whitewashed houses and narrow lanes climbing towards a ruined castle that looks out over the Sierra Cortina and, on clear days, far across the Mediterranean. The village predates the Christian reconquest of this stretch of the Spanish Levant, and its upper streets retain the compact, labyrinthine character of a settlement shaped by Moorish town planning rather than modern convenience. Below, the municipality stretches down to the coastal strip it shares with Benidorm, making Finestrat one of the more quietly contradictory places on the entire Costa Blanca: ancient stonework and a medieval church tower within a short drive of one of Europe's most recognisable resort skylines.

That proximity to Benidorm is not incidental. The two places have grown together economically and practically, and visitors based in either tend to move freely between them. Finestrat's lower reaches, around the Cala de Finestrat inlet, have developed considerably over recent decades, but the hilltop village itself has resisted the more intensive development that transformed its neighbour from a modest fishing settlement into a tower-block resort during the latter half of the twentieth century. The contrast is worth understanding before you arrive, because it shapes what you will actually find: quiet lanes and a local bar or two up on the hill, and a much fuller range of facilities and attractions once you descend towards the coast.
