Din guide til Bremen

Din billetguide til Bremen

Few German cities carry their mythology quite as lightly as Bremen. The Brothers Grimm placed their famous Town Musicians here, and the bronze statue of the donkey, dog, cat, and rooster stacked one upon another outside the Rathaus has become one of the most photographed monuments in northern Germany, its lower limbs worn bright by the hands of visitors who rub them for luck. Yet Bremen is far more than a fairy tale backdrop. It is a Hanseatic city with a trading history stretching back to the early medieval period, a place that earned its wealth through the North Sea routes and still carries that mercantile confidence in its architecture and its civic pride.

The old town clusters around the Marktplatz, where the Rathaus and the Roland statue together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the latter a symbol of Bremen's historic freedoms and its right to trade independently. The square is flanked by the St Petri Dom, whose twin towers have defined the city's skyline for centuries. A short walk away, the Böttcherstrasse is something of a curiosity: a narrow alley rebuilt in the 1920s in an expressionist style funded by the coffee merchant Ludwig Roselius, its brick facades and sculptural details sitting in deliberate contrast to the Gothic grandeur of the market square. The Schnoor quarter, Bremen's oldest surviving neighbourhood, offers a different texture again, its lanes so narrow and its gabled houses so low that the district feels compressed into an earlier century.
