Saint-Ours sits in the Puy-de-Dôme department of the Auvergne region in central France, a quiet commune whose name would mean little to most travellers were it not for one remarkable fact: it stands at the foot of an extinct volcanic landscape that ranks among the most geologically significant in Europe. The Chaîne des Puys, a chain of some eighty volcanoes stretching across the horizon to the west, earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2018, and Saint-Ours finds itself at the very edge of this ancient terrain, where the ground beneath your feet carries the memory of eruptions that shaped the region over hundreds of thousands of years.

The dominant reason visitors find their way to Saint-Ours is Vulcania, the European Park of Volcanism that opened in 2002 and was conceived by former French president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing as a way of bringing the science of volcanology to a broad public.
