Your guide to Aosta

Your guide to Aosta tickets

Few Italian cities carry their Roman past as visibly as Aosta. Tucked into the western Alps at the confluence of the Dora Baltea and Buthier rivers, this compact Valle d'Aosta capital sits at roughly 580 metres above sea level, ringed by peaks that exceed four thousand metres. The Roman colony of Augusta Praetoria Salassorum was founded here in 25 BC, and the evidence is not buried in a museum but standing in the open air: the Arch of Augustus, the Porta Praetoria, the theatre ruins, and the remains of the forum are woven into the fabric of the modern town. Walking the old centre means moving through two millennia of continuous habitation, which gives Aosta a density of atmosphere that larger, more visited Italian cities sometimes struggle to match.

The street grid still follows the Roman castrum plan, with the cardo and decumanus legible beneath the medieval and baroque layers. The cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, contains a treasury of early Christian and medieval objects, and the collegiate church of Sant'Orso, just east of the Porta Praetoria, is one of the finest Romanesque complexes in the north-west, its cloister capitals carved with scenes that reward slow looking. The town is small enough to cover on foot in a morning, yet the concentration of monuments per square metre is genuinely unusual for a city of this size.
